Falls’ Junior League baseball team hosted two different squads from Grand Rapids for a doubleheader Thursday at Scheela Field and ended up with two different results.

In the opening game, Falls defeated the Grand Rapids Angels, 8-3.

Jack Mellstrom pitched the opening 2 2/3 innings for the Falls before being relieved for the rest of the game by Wyatt Ulrich.

Falls broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second with five runs that included Ben Humbert connecting on a bases-loaded triple.

Humbert accounted for two of Falls’ four hits in the opening contest.

In the second game, Falls led early before losing the six-inning contest to the Grand Rapids Orioles, 12-4.

Falls held a two-run lead through three innings before it was all Orioles, who overcame a 4-2 deficit with five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

The Orioles only registered four hits, but walks accounted for Falls’ undoing by giving up 17 of them.

Cole Miggins started the first 3 1/3 innings for the Falls, before being relieved for 1 2/3 innings by Jack Bartkowski and Max Vergeldt taking the mound for the sixth inning.

Of Falls’ seven hits, Humbert and Rylan Henrickson each had two.

Falls’ Junior League has a doubleheader scheduled Thursday at Hibbing and a make-up twin bill at home Friday against Greenway, prior to hosting the District Tournament starting July 14.

The five-team, double-elimination tournament runs through July 17 and includes the Falls, Greenway, Itasca, Deer River and Hibbing.
