The International Falls VFW baseball team will open the eight-team, double-elimination District Tournament it has qualified for with a 1:30 p.m. game Monday against Proctor at Portage Park in Cohasset.
The winner of that game will play again at 6:30 p.m. Monday against the winner of the 11 a.m. game between Ely and Hibbing. The loser between Falls and Proctor will face the loser between Ely and Hibbing at 4 p.m.
Falls qualified for the District Tournament after finishing last weekend’s Sub-District Tournament at Scheela Field as the No. 2 seed. Hibbing, which lost twice to the Falls last weekend, qualified as a No. 3 seed.
The other four teams in the District Tournament play their first games on Monday at Legion Field in Grand Rapids. At that field, Grand Rapids, which is the No. 1 seed from last weekend’s Sub-District Tournament, faces Ordean A at 11 a.m. The other two teams, Virginia and Hermantown, play each other at 1:30 p.m.
The winners of the two opening games at Legion Field are scheduled to face each other there at 6:30 p.m. Monday, while the game for the two losers is set for 4 p.m.
With six teams remaining after Monday, the remaining games scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday will be held at Legion Field.
If Falls would win both games on Monday, it would face the other undefeated team in the other bracket at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Losing one game on Monday would make it necessary to win two games on Tuesday to remain in the tournament.
Winning the opening game and losing the second game Monday would place Falls into a possible elimination game at 11 a.m. Tuesday. An opening loss and a second-game victory Monday would set up a possible elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. If Falls wins at either 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. it would have to win a subsequent game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to play again Wednesday.
With only three teams remaining on Wednesday — two with one loss and one undefeated in the tournament — the two teams with a loss would play each other at 2 p.m. Wednesday. That winner would then play the undefeated team at 7 p.m.
In the event the undefeated team wins Wednesday night, that team would automatically become the District Tournament champion. If both teams finish Wednesday night’s action with one loss in the tournament, the deciding game would take place Thursday at 7 p.m.
