The 2011 season ended with an extra inning Tuesday for International Falls’ VFW baseball team.

Falls was eliminated from the eight-team, double-elimination District Tournament at Legion Field in Grand Rapids after losing to Ordean A, 7-5, in eight innings.

With runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Falls tied the game at 4-4 on a base hit and nearly won when the final out of the inning took place at home plate.

Ordean A then pulled back in front by three in the top of the eighth before Falls was only able to score once more.

Gunnar Anderson pitched all eight innings for the Falls as he allowed 16 hits. Falls registered eight hits for the game from eight different batters.

Falls opened the VFW District Tournament by spliting two more close games Monday at Portage Park in Cohasset.

In the opening contest, Falls defeated Proctor, 4-2. Caleb Dahlin pitched all seven innings for the Falls as he allowed only three hits and struck out eight.

Luke Spilde, who drove in Falls’ first run with a single in the fourth inning, had two hits. Jackson Vollom added a triple.

In Monday evening’s contest against Ely, Falls overcame a four-run deficit after four innings to tie the game before losing on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4.

Of Falls’ nine hits, Anderson had four of them, including two doubles. Ryan Kilbride added two hits.

Ben Humbert pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for the Falls, before Josh Potter took the mound for the rest of the game.
