Nominations for the first inductees into an athletic hall of fame being set up at International Falls High School have been adding up since nomination forms were recently made available at Bronco home games.
The group involved in establishing the hall of fame is accepting nominations until Oct. 1 and on Wednesday heard a listing of the nominations received so far.
The nomination form, which was also included this summer in the FHS Alumni Newsletter, seeks the name of a player, coach/director/advisor, at-large member or team to submit to the hall of fame in care of athletic director Don Rolando.
Rolando is one of the group members along with Bronco sports booster and math teacher Timm Ringhofer, Falls School Board member and former head football coach Stuart Nordquist and a few others who began meeting in April in an effort to set up the hall of fame.
Many of the nominations received so far are football related. For instance, some of the football players nominated include Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Bronko Nagurski, his son Bronko Nagurski Jr., former Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Frank Youso and former Washington Redskins defensive back Jim Crotty.
Two of Falls’ undefeated football teams, the first undefeated team in 1946 and the 1954 team voted state champions, are among the team nominations, as is a Bronco girls basketball team that played in the state tournament in the late 1980s.
Two female athletes nominated include Tina Bahr, who holds Falls’ school records in the girls 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and Nicole Friend, who scored 1,571 points on the Bronco girls basketball team from 1999-2003.
Though Falls has won seven state championships in boys hockey, the only hockey-related nomination of note submitted as of Wednesday is for the head coach who led the Broncos to six of them, Larry Ross.
Other coaching nominations include: Frank Larson, who led the Bronco football team to undefeated seasons in 1954 and 1955; Nordquist, who coached Falls’ football for decades and also was a boys basketball coach from 1989-93; Jim Rolando, who compiled a 138-88 record as the boys basketball head coach from 1971-1982; and Kevin Dowty, who had a record of 246-177 as the girls basketball head coach from 1978-1997.
While the process of accepting nominations is presently taking place, the details on determining who to induct into the hall of fame have yet to be finalized. The group is planning on setting up a seven-member selection committee for that purpose.
Under a written proposal the group has looked at, a five-sevenths majority vote would be required to be inducted into the hall of fame.
The proposal also would direct the selection committee to vote on a maximum number of six nominees in the first year and a maximum of four in subsequent years.
In addition to accepting nominations, the group has been seeking “seed money” to cover start-up costs, such as expenses related to purchasing plaques and holding banquets to honor the inductees.
The Falls School Board this summer approved establishing an assigned fund balance for the purpose of receiving charitable contributions for the Bronco Hall of Fame.
Group member Chris Oustad agreed Wednesday to look into how much it might cost to hold an induction ceremony at some area establishments.
The group’s next meeting is set for Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 212 at FHS.
